History

The San Mateo County Historical Association started in 1935. Dr. Frank Stanger, the first executive director, goals were preserving the county’s historical sites, developing an archive for the county’s history and creating a museum dedicated to preserving reminders of the county’s past.

The San Mateo County Historical Association operates three historical sites: the San Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City, the Woodside Store in Woodside, and the Sanchez Adobe in Pacifica. It also runs school programs at the Folger Stable in Woodside.

The original goals of the Historical Association have expanded to include providing meaningful learning experiences for the county’s residents and guests with special attention devoted to children’s programs. Through hands-on experiences, students are much more likely to learn, appreciate, and integrate historical information into their current lives. We also offer an exciting calendar of public programs including workshops, lectures and family days. Museum Educator: History Museum & Folger Stable –

2 positions available

The Museum Educator presents educational tours and hands-on activities to children and adults primarily at the San Mateo County History Museum in downtown Redwood City and occasionally at the Folger Stables at Wunderlich Park in Woodside. This position is on an as-needed basis. In general, the Museum Educator will work 6-15 hours per week during the school year. Ideal candidates will have reliable transportation to both the San Mateo County History Museum in downtown Redwood City and Folger Stables at Wunderlich Park in Woodside. The Museum Educator enhances the visitor experience through providing active, engaging tours and activities for mostly elementary school children.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Under moderate supervision, set-up and present interactive programs and tours to school groups (primarily 1st- 4th grade) at the San Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City and Folger Stables in Woodside. These programs address the themes of transportation, natural resources, and immigration.
• Use a variety of educational materials, resources and equipment during programs.
• Provide instruction and minor supervision of chaperones running hands-on activities during the tours and programs.
• Clean up after programs.
• Present engaging general tours for youth and adult groups.
• Working closely with staff and volunteers, provide a helpful environment for visitors during tours and programs.
• Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma, some college preferred, and two years working experience, preferably with children. Public speaking, teaching or museum experience helpful. General knowledge of and/or interest in history of California and San Mateo County.

Traits, Skills and Abilities:
Reliable and dependable. Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to work enthusiastically and effectively with visitors, museum staff, volunteers and program participants (including adults and children). Ability to be flexible while working in a busy, active public work environment. Ability to provide an atmosphere that reinforces a positive environment for students. Ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural community.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires a lot of time standing and walking and some bending. May include moving light furniture and program props. May require lifting objects weighing up to 35 pounds.

The Museum Educator presents educational tours and hands-on activities to children and adults primarily at the Sánchez Adobe in Pacifica. This position is on an as-needed basis. In general, the Museum Educator will work 6-15 hours per week during the school year. Ideal candidates will have reliable transportation to the Sánchez Adobe in Pacifica. The Museum Educator enhances the visitor experience through providing active, engaging tours and activities for mostly elementary school children.

Description:

Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, the Education Director leads the development, implementation and evaluation of the San Mateo County History Museum’s education programs with the goal of fulfilling the mission to inspire wonder and discovery through education about the cultural and natural history of San Mateo County. This encompasses school programs, public programs for adults and children, docent training, outreach programs, printed materials and educational interactives in exhibitions. The Education Director will work with staff and volunteers to meet the education goals of the organization’s strategic plan.

Responsibilities:

Manage interactive programs and tours for school groups (primarily 1^st– 4^th grade) and adult tours at the San Mateo County History Museum. Duties include oversight of scheduling, recruiting and supervising docents and organizing needed resources. The Education Director will present programs and tours for all age levels.
Manage the regular schedule of public programs including Playing in the Past, Family Past Times and the Courthouse Docket.
Work on 1-2 larger public programs each year at the History Museum.
Work to help create and strengthen community partnerships to help tell the county’s diverse stories.
Work with the Deputy Director on developing and implementing creative programs needed to fulfill the strategic goals of the organization. This includes working to establish summer programs for youth, programs for adults and school and public programs related to new exhibits.
Assist with the recruiting and training of volunteers.
Assist with publicizing education programs, including updating the education pages of the organization’s website.
Working closely with Deputy Director and volunteers, provide a helpful environment for Museum visitors during tours and programs.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Degree in museum studies, history or education.
At minimum of 4 years of experience in a museum education department.
General knowledge of and/or interest in history of California and San Mateo County preferred. Knowledge of natural history would be helpful as a new permanent exhibit on natural history will open in late summer 2026.

Public speaking or teaching experience highly preferred.

Woodside Store Site Manager

Duties:

The site manager’s major responsibilities are to interpret the Woodside Store for the public and conduct hands-on education programs for 3rd and 4th grade classes. The 2.5 hour school program includes a slideshow on the history of the area, an object hunt in the store, and 1880s activities.

The site manager is also responsible for making sales at the gift shop, maintaining the interior of the building, keeping attendance and sales figures, and informing the deputy director of the needs and developing problems of the site. The site manager will work with other members of the Historical Association’s professional team on public programs as needed.

Qualifications:

High school diploma required. Some college experience preferred.
Two years working experience, preferably with children.
Public speaking, teaching or museum experience preferred.
General knowledge of and/or interest in history of California and San Mateo County.

Description:

Answer multi-line phone and greet visitors. The employee should keep informed about the museum’s programs and exhibits to answer questions and inform the public.
Open the museum in the morning and close the museum at the end of the day.
Operate the register for purchase of admission tickets and sale of merchandise in the Museum Store. Assist with the annual inventory of the Museum Store.
Tally admission records.
Word processing, including the President’s correspondence.
In consultation with the Deputy Director, schedule education programs including traveling trunks and school programs at the San Mateo County History Museum and Folger Stable. Responsible for tracking payments for education programs.

A mark of following professional standards, we have maintained our accreditation since 1972. Currently, less than 5% of museums in the United States are accredited.
