People from Many Places
The Immigrant Experience
Tour
Discover the diversity of the people who made the San Francisco Peninsula their home in the exhibit, Land of Opportunity: The Immigrant Experience in San Mateo County. Students discover which countries immigrants came from, the rich cultural traditions that they brought with them, and how those traditions have become part of local custom.
Cultural Activities
After the tour, the students participate in cultural activities in the Wells Fargo Learning Center. The activities are divided into three themes offered for three months each.
Toys and Games: October through December
Through interactive play and craft-making, students participate in some pastimes enjoyed by Chinese, Filipino and Italian immigrants.
Paper Arts: January through March
After learning about Japanese, Chinese, and Mexican celebrations, students create paper artwork that immigrants from these countries still make.
Music and Dance: April through June
Students listen to music and watch video of dances performed by members of the Irish, Portuguese, and Japanese communities. Then, they make props and try the dances.
